Porto: Location and Accommodation
PORTO

Porto is the second-largest city in Portugal. Located along the Douro River in northern Portugal, it is an outstanding urban landscape with a 2.000-year history. Porto is one of the oldest European centers, registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. Its Latin name, Portus Cale has been referred to as the origin for the name "Portugal". Its continuous growth can be seen in the many and varied monuments, such as the Portuguese Manueline-style Church of Santa Clara. Among the many churches you can find in Porto are São FranciscoNossa Senhora da Vitória and lgreja dos Clérigos of Niccolò Nazzoni. Other prominent public buildings are the São João Theatre, the Palácio da Batalha and the former Prison da Relação, along with important later structures such as the Alfândega, the Bolsa Palace, the Ferreira Borges Market, the São Bento railway station and thePaços do Concelho.

Porto is well known by the production and exports of Porto wine. This is one of Portugal's internationally famous exports, and several warehouses of Vila Nova de Gaia can be visited by tourists. Also, boat travels along the Douro River can be experienced and appreciated. To the north and south of the Douro River, Porto is blessed with a wealth of long, clean, sandy beaches. Whilst naturally busier in the summer months, the beaches of Porto offer plenty of space to sunbathe and relax in peace and quiet.

In 2001, Porto shared the designation European Culture Capital and, in the scope of these events, the construction of the major concert hall space Casa da Música

Another cultural icon of Porto is the Serralves Foundation, a European cultural institution whose mission is to raise the general public's awareness concerning contemporary art and the environment. The Foundation pursues its mission via the Museum of Contemporary Art as a multi-disciplinary centre, the Park as a natural heritage site ideally suited for environmental education and entertainment activities and the Auditorium as a centre for reflection and debate on issues facing contemporary society.

SÃO JOÃO

Every year, on the night of 23 june, the city of Porto becomes lively and seemingly crazy. Several thousands of people come to the city centre and to the most traditional locations to pay a tribute to saint john the baptist (são joão baptista), in a party that mixes sacred and profane traditions.

The party starts early in the afternoon of 23 june and usually lasts until the morning of 24 june. The traditional attractions of the night include street concerts, popular dancing parties, jumping over flames, eating barbecued sardines and meat, drinking wine and releasing illuminated flame-propelled balloons over Porto's summer sky.

At midnight the partyers make a short break to look at the sky at saint john's firework spectacle. The show is increasingly sophisticated with the fireworks being associated with themes and multimedia shows.
